Once autumn comes and the leaves are bare, the core will have grown to 26 stories high and will be a stark, bare concrete presence for several months. It was close to here that we photographed the former NatWest Tower behind the Iron Man statue in 2009 (see below). It's being fed by a dozen concrete mixers per day and reaching for the sky.Click on our comprehensive picture gallery here to see how work has progressed over the past year and how the core is beginning to look from different vantage points in the city centre.Since then and despite some inclement, pre-autumnal weather in mid-August, it's now already up to level 15.Another place where you can see how the 103 Colmore Row will soon dominate the city is from Bennetts Hill. From the entrance to the 1890s' former General Post Office at the top of New Street (currently inaccessible to the public re the Midland Metro Tram works), the view of the rising core is equally dramatic. The fast-rising 103 Colmore Row tower block core is rising faster than you can say Jack & The Beanstalk - but there's another 11 levels to goThe new tower block is due to be 26-storeys high including the ground floor. The above picture was taken at the front door of the Cosy Club, a former Midland Bank on the corner of Waterloo Street. The wider impact of the tower is also now visible from Victoria Square and even Centenary Square.John Madin's 22-storey NatWest Tower was 262 feet tall when completed in 1974.The building will have 12 lifts including a single dedicated lift serving the roof top restaurant and a single 30-person / 3000kg goods lift.Although it will be 84ft taller than the NatWest Tower, it will be 51ft shorter than the Beetham Tower and 153ft shorter than the 499ft BT Tower.Designed by architects Doone Silver Kerr, the building will also include an 18th floor, 3,000 sq ft private terrace to 'allow occupants to work without walls'.Now, as you can see in the above video, the fast-growing 103 Colmore Row tower is soon going to have a massive impact on the city's skyline. There will be multi-purpose lobby business lounges and ten showers.Back at 103 Colmore Row, future piling works along Newhall Street will allow for the Basement Level 1 to be extended. It's one thing to keep building almost identical resident blocks for students and investors all round the city centre, quite another to create a genuine landmark of which everyone can be proud.Whether you are on Colmore Row, Newhall Street or Bennetts Hill the concrete core is already beginning to soar over local rooftops.Walk up to the Town Hall and the core can be seen in between the council house to your left and the recently restored statue of Queen Victoria to your right. The NatWest Tower was a Brutalist brick and concrete design which held its own on Colmore Row because it was distinctively different enough to cope with its own ugliness. At 346 ft high, with the apex 807 ft above sea level, 103 Colmore Row is the highest new office building under construction outside London. And it's barely even halfway to its 26-storey goal.As well as lots of buses now using Colmore Row nearby, the tower will also be almost equidistant between railway stations at New Street and Snow Hill - which are also both served by Midland Metro trams to Wolverhampton (and to the Hagley Road beyond Five Ways from 2021).The bronze statue of the first Bishop of Birmingham, Charles Gore, will then be seen pointing directly towards it.Bearing in mind how wide the finished block will be (see CGI below), and with another 11 levels still to add to to its height, the core is an indication of how 103 Colmore Row will come to dominate the view from Centenary Square in the fullness of time.Just across the road is Dirty Martini, which replaced the short-lived Viva Brazil which opened in time for the Brazil Olympics in 2016 but only lasted for 14 months despite a £1 million investment. But 103 Colmore Row will become the tallest commercial building in Birmingham, dwarfing the Council House in Victoria Square as well as the neighbouring conservation quarter buildings on Colmore Row.The former was demolished from 2015 to 2017 and the latter was removed in September 2017 to make way for the tram works. The core is now beginning to dominate the Victorian buildings on Colmore Row even though the trees of Cathedral Square are in full leaf. But it had been disused for years before a crane arrived on September 20, 2015 to begin its lengthy demolition above and below ground, a process which continued into early 2017.Building the tower around the core and completing the interiors will then take about 18 more months. The new core for 103 Colmore Row has now announced its own arrival on the scene.Big Brum used to stand alone between the new offices at One and Two Chamberlain Square. But, as our pictures show, those extra floors are already making a real difference to Brum's cityscape. It will have two restaurants, a winter garden and offices.A week ago, workmen were busy on level 13.Latest news straight to your inboxParking facilities will include space for 24 cars, 92 bicycles and three motorcycles but the site will be very handy for public transport. It was also a narrower tower than its replacement which will look more 'thickset' despite its height.Eventually, the tower will be a gleaming presence in the city, arguably the most high quality development since the 397ft tall Beetham Tower / Radisson Blu hotel was completed on the corner of Smallbrook Queensway in May, 2006.Your eyes follow the roof lines of the 1834 Birmingham Town Hall and the 1879 Council House before core appears on the far right. But, in the last fortnight, the core for 103 Colmore Row has begun to rise over the rooftop level of BMAG behind the clock tower. The main steel frame of the tower will follow the completion of the core, with a second crane set to help to speed things up.
