Put a nice cut in my right leg. Also, bring tons of water if you aren’t used to hiking in that level of heat! Beautiful views.This was a very cool trail with a lot of fun scrambles. Piestewa Peak is easier on the knees with shorter steps but the trail is extremely jagged in sections. It's just an easy stroll along the road in a decent neighborhood, though.To take the more challenging Echo Canyon trail, you will take N Echo Canyon Parkway south just east of the Tatum & McDonald intersection. My only complaint would be that this is a very busy trail - I encountered dozens of other people even very early in the morning. Visiting climbers might also be interested in The Praying Monk, a 100 foot rock formation resembling a monk who is praying.Completed this hike last June and it was incredible. If it isn't full, you can drive right in and park. It is a climb. The reviews that referred to this as a climb the last half mile were right on. Very fun but being water and go in the morning so they don’t have to use one of the two heli pads for your rescue.Do not underestimate how hard it is!! Views from the peak an unparalleled.My favorite trail of all time in the Phoenix area! This trail offers a steady climb to the upper areas of South Mountain Park. Now I see why there's not many high quality YouTube videos of the hike because it's hard to do camera work and make it up. Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain is one of the two trails that will lead you right to the top of the summit, which also happens to be the tallest peak in the Phoenix area. Hike Up Camelback Mountain via Cholla Trail This challenging hike up the east side of Camelback Mountain has beautiful views of Phoenix and Scottsdale, and is not often crowded.You will begin on switchbacks heading up the mountain, with trail markers to guide you at first.
We got to the parking lot on a Monday at 5:45am and wish we got there at 5. So hard but funMy first time hiking Camelback and definitely worth the exhaustion! Lack of parking helps thin out the crowds. The last half mile of the trail involves a rock scramble so proper footwear is key.Traffic is extremely heavy during the winter season on the Echo Canyon route so consider the Cholla Trail or other hiking trails in the Phoenix area.
