Then walk north past Vista Drive to Cholla Lane and head west. I'm not a regular hiker, but in decent shape and although I would not classify this as difficult, I wouldn't call this easy, either. Cholla Trail (east side of Camelback Mountain): Get to 64th street from Camelback Road, McDonald Dr, Chaparral Rd, or Jackrabbit Road. There is lots of stretching along the way. The trail is very mellow at first, but by mile 0.2 the incline is already turning up.At mile 1.2 the trail drops down a little. Remember uphill hikers have the right-of-way, and give them space to safely pass.One alternative is to take a rideshare service (Uber, Lyft, etc.) I really enjoyed hiking the steep rocks going up and hiking the long ridge on the way down. It is free and you can park there until sunset. I went early to avoid crowds (7:30 am on a Friday morning). As you hike up at early morning, don't forget to turn around from time to time to enjoy beautiful sunrise. There were about 10 times as many hikers on the Echo Canyon trail as on the Cholla trail. Take it seriously, because it's not a walk in the park!It was lovely. There are a few bottlenecks near the top, so watch for people coming up. I love everything from hiking well maintained, popular trails in the Southwest to mountaineering less accessible peaks. Breathtaking!Hiking Camelback is a popular attraction for vistors and locals. It's amazing to see locals running up and down this trail like mountain goats, but most of them are possibly certifiable (just kidding....kind of). If you live too far for that you can park in a shopping center nearby and use a rideshare service to get you to East Cholla Lane from there. Just before (or after) that road (depending on which direction you're coming from), you will see parking spaces off to the side of the road. If I lived nearby I would do this hike often.The Cholla Trail is the *easier* of two ways up Camelback Mountain. Both trails were quite crowded. The Cholla Trail is the more gradual, but longer route of the two. That isn't to say that there isn't accessible parking. Road trips and collecting high points are my main motive. You can see out for miles. It took almost 3 hours and was about 5 miles total. From Phoenix, get on highway 51 going North. Coming down, naturally, was so much easier and faster, but it can be a little hard on your knees. We got some great pics and a strong workout, especially the quads. Cholla Trail: Great hike, but no parking! My wife dropped me off at the Echo Canyon trailhead. It's also very gravely at points, so you have to be cautious as not to slip.

The Cholla Cactus Garden is accessed from the Cholla Cactus Garden parking area, located on Pinto Basin Road approximately 9.8 miles east of the intersection of Pinto Basin Road and Park Boulevard. And if you are NOT in shape, have 2 hands free, and have enough water, DO NOT go past the dancefloor/table top area (you will know it when you see it--there are 3 or 4 stairs up to a flat area, which is about halfway up the trail).
