So I sat down with Tony Platt, who mixed the album, and said, “Listen Tony, I think we’re going to have to bury the drums on this one. I can’t really do lessons for fifty cents for you…but if you want to do private lessons, we could do that.” I’m like, “Sure!” So I talked my mom into doing that. “That whole time it was still shaking,” Dale says. But we exchanged phone numbers, and I’m going to call him up and grill him—see why he did it and what he did. That stuff really made a big impression on me. It worked pretty well. He is also guitarist and vocalist for Altamont.

We speak with Crover about the first time he saw the Melvins, way back before he joined the band in 1984. I knew it was on hydraulics and I thought maybe they were messing with it, but after a couple seconds I looked at one of the sound techs and he’s like, ‘Earthquake!’ It was getting violent, and I could tell it was super-big.” The band members scrambled around the building to find an exit, at first with no success. A 24″ always sounded better recorded than a 26″. “There were big PAR can [lights] on the stage swaying back and forth—we didn’t want one of those to fall on our heads.” In the chaos Crover (who was also in San Francisco for that city’s major 1989 quake) dislocated his left pinkie; he’s not sure exactly how.
“Plus that 10-inch is in mono, because they cut it on an old lathe from the ’40s,” Crover says.
They don’t shatter in the middle often, and they don’t break at the tip when I’m crashing my cymbals.Beneath the pomp and parading is a very musical metal, and one of the hardest-working and clearest-thinking drummers in rock.On the latest album, we did 11 mixes of the song “Tonight It’s You,” and I was thinking, “This doesn’t sound right, especially the drums.” And then it dawned on me: I was doing all these great Kenney Jones-type Small Faces drum intro licks right there on the vocal spots. [laughs] So the teacher’s like, “Well, on paper this looked good because I figured I’d probably get like ten bucks out of it. Related videos. We’ve worked with Denny Carmassi, and I’ve talked to him about Heart. I kind of don’t want to meet the rest of my heroes now, because I’m afraid I might not like them. Now we have Crover’s first full solo album, The Fickle Finger of Fate, which contains most of the material on Skins, alternating the short drum-oriented tracks with more standard verse/chorus-type songs on which Dale supplies the majority of the instruments and vocals. I didn’t see any reason why I would ever have to get a new drumkit…until Coady was in the band and we went to Tama one day and they showed us their new Starclassic Bubingas.
