The idea of a semi truck that runs on something other than diesel has generated a surprising amount of interest from the trucking industry. Nikola Motor Company, like Tesla Motors, is focusing on all-electric propulsion. With the Nikola Trucks and our Hydrogen Fueling Station Network, there is no need to worry about range. Apparently Nikola couldn’t make the system a reality. The truck is designed using extensive carbon fiber and is supposed to offer autonomous driving capabilities over its 1,000-mile range, all while saving its operator on fuel, maintenance, and downtime costs.
The company’s website states the truck costs $5,000 a month, including the lease payment with unlimited miles, maintenance, and unlimited fuel from one of its 50+ planned CNG throughout North America.It’s the Nikola Zero, an all-electric UTV, and it was revealed at the Sand Sports Super Show in Torrance, California on September 17th. Think of it as Tesla’s Supercharger network for hydrogen-powered vehicles.The One emits nothing but water vapor thanks to a hydrogen-electric drivetrain that generates 1,000 horsepower and a stunning 2,000 pound-feet of torque. The change in plans planted seeds of doubt in hopeful onlookers, but Nikola Motors has seemingly made the truck a reality.All the components are said to be waterproof, as well, allowing the UTV to theoretically operate under water. It’s also capable of cruising at 65 mph up a hill, meaning it could be the first semi to travel in the fast lane up a mountain pass.Electricity is generated by a hydrogen fuel cell and stored in a lithium-ion battery pack. The Nikola One is a long-haul semi-truck with a 1,200-mile range and the ability to pull the standard 80,000-pound load. The Nikola One requires only 15 minutes of downtime before heading out for the next 1,000 miles.”However, neither Milton nor Nikola’s latest press release identified exactly how the company can achieve claim of zero emissions. Production is scheduled to start by 2020, and the One will be quickly followed up by a smaller model appropriately named Two. The Nikola One uses electric motors at each of the six wheels, giving it AWD and torque vectoring capabilities. It will offer truckers a 72-month/one million-mile lease program that includes unlimited hydrogen, a warranty, and scheduled maintenance for anywhere between $5,000 and $7,000 a month. “In the trucking world, every pound is worth 50 cents a load.
