I worked the “Sea Land ship moving the supply containers and moving the base trash.Anyone remember “White Alice”? But the memories they built on Adak live on in my son’s heart and mine.Looking at my old base makes me feel real old.
Anybody know what became of the totem pole that used to stand in the traffic circle near the end of one runway? No one believes we had them on the truck. I have fond memories of hiking all over, no matter the weather. They almost tore the door off my truck, and they flipped my umbrella inside out. There are some graphic images of dead Japanese soldiers, downed planes and even fallen US servicemen. Adak Cars is another subject in itself. I went up a jimmied it opened. Awesome place!! I just got back on this site and saw your repIy. The cafeteria was in the basement of the school. He talked about it a lot over the years.I miss Adak so much. I recently found an old photo album of his that included his photos from Adak and from the Battle of Attu. Would love to return and tour the island more as I recalled alot of WWII bunkers and gun emplacements. Returned in 1981 as a member of VP-4 and again worked at the hangar. We have such great memories of the tight knit community, salmon runs, bald eagle and otter sightings, and the enlisted men taking my son on his first sled/toboggan ride down Mt Moffet.
It housed around 6,000 military personnel and dependents. Still, Adak was and is an auwsome place .Speaking of night mares….. Adagdat. My parents loved it there. THE HISTORY: At one time Adak was the 6th largest city in Alaska. I had them for around 10 years before we finaly got rid of them….I wa stationed there ‘80-81; anchored the evening news and hosted a morning radio show while assigned to Navy Broadcasting Service, Det 21; Armed Forces Radio & Television Service. Never made that mistake again. I was a high school student.
We flew out to Adak from time to time. Played softball on the field there by McDonalds, shot some pool at MWR I believe it was. You should excavate the dump!
