Certain high schools have been particularly successful at placing semifinalists and finalists in the Science Talent Search. As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Intel Foundation, we also look toward its future, and how we can address our growing concern with the widening gap in access to technology. Finalists enjoy the Intel Quad at the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public and the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. In 2020, due to the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic, Society for Science & The Public and Regeneron have decided to hold the finalist week as a virtual competition in lieu of traveling to Washington D.C.Entrants to the competition conduct original research—sometimes at home and sometimes by "working with leading research teams at universities, hospitals and private laboratories. "Each year, approximately 1,800 papers are submitted. New York has had by far the most finalists in the competition, followed by California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida, Virginia, Massachusetts, Texas, and Ohio. Through a global network of local, regional and national science fairs, top students are selected from millions, all who have demonstrated their knowledge of science and engineering to further their understanding of the world and improve the way we work and live. Three hundred semifinalists are awarded $2,000, along with $2,000 to be donated to their high schools to support STEM education.
